A History of Natal has established a place for itself as a standard work of reference in libraries, schools and homes.  Using a wide range of sources, the authors set out to tell the story of the people - African, European and Asian - who in the period from the early nineteenth century to 1910 laid the foundations of present-day Natal. Economic and social as well as political factors are considered, and three supplementary chapters take the story up to 1961.

An important feature of the original edition was the comprehensive annotated bibliography.
