Over the last ten years the multi-volume series of the James Stuart Archive has established itself as an indispensable research tool for scholars working on the history and ethnography of the Zulu kingdom and neighbouring regions.

This fourth volume is the largest of the series so far published. A third of it is devoted to the testimony given by Ndukwana kaMbengwana, Stuart's most prolific informant, on a wide variety of topics relating to the history and social structure of the Zulu kingdom in the reigns of Mpande kaSenzangakhona and Cetshwayo kaMpande.

The volume also publishes the testimony of 19 other informants, bringing to 119 the number whose statements have so far appeared in the series.
